About Sensory Integration

Sensory integration therapy (SIT), also known as Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI), is a therapeutic approach designed to improve the way individuals process and interpret sensory information from their environment. SIT uses a play-based approach where therapists guide individuals through various activities that stimulate different senses. These activities help individuals:

  • Develop sensory awareness
  • Improve sensory processing
  • Modulate sensory responses
  • Develop self-regulation skills

Sensory processing disorder (SPD)

Difficulty processing sensory information, leading to sensory sensitivities or aversions.

Developmental delays

Delays in speech, language, motor skills, and social interaction.

Behavioral challenges

Tantrums, meltdowns, aggression, or withdrawal due to difficulties managing sensory input.

Learning difficulties

Challenges in focusing, attending, and retaining information.

Benefits of SIT:

  • Improved sensory processing: Individuals become better at interpreting and responding to sensory information, leading to better sensory regulation.
  • Enhanced motor skills: Sensory integration plays a crucial role in motor development, and improving sensory processing can lead to improved coordination, balance, and movement skills.
  • Increased attention and focus: Sensory processing difficulties can impact attention and focus, and improving sensory integration can lead to improved concentration and learning abilities.
  • Reduced behavioral challenges: By providing individuals with the tools to manage sensory input, SIT can help reduce challenging behaviors.
  • Improved social interaction: Difficulties processing sensory information can impact social interactions, and improving sensory integration can promote better social communication and engagement.
  • Enhanced self-esteem and confidence: Individuals with better sensory processing skills feel more confident and capable in their environment.

Who can benefit from SIT?

SIT can be beneficial for kids of all ages, including:

  • Infants, toddlers, and children with SPD, developmental delays, or other sensory processing challenges.
