Gout

About Gout

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that causes sudden and severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in one or more joints, most often in the big toe. It’s caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints.

Symptoms of gout:

  • Sudden and severe pain in one or more joints, most often the big toe
  • Swelling, redness, and tenderness in the affected joint
  • Warmth to the touch in the affected joint
  • Limited range of motion in the affected joint

Causes of gout:

  • High uric acid levels (hyperuricemia): This is the main cause of gout. Uric acid is a natural waste product produced by the body when it breaks down purines, found in certain foods and drinks. Normally, uric acid is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and passed out in urine. However, if your body produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don’t remove it efficiently, it can build up in your blood and form needle-like crystals in your joints.
  • Certain medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease, can increase your risk of gout.
  • Certain medications: Some medications, such as diuretics, low-dose aspirin, and cyclosporine, can also increase your risk of gout.
  • Diet and lifestyle: Certain foods and drinks, such as red meat, organ meats, seafood, sugary beverages, and alcohol, can trigger gout attacks.

Physical therapy can be a valuable tool in managing gout alongside medication and lifestyle changes. Here are some of the key advantages of physical therapy for gout:

During a gout attack:

  • Pain management: Techniques like ice application, electrical stimulation, and gentle range-of-motion exercises can help reduce pain and inflammation in the affected joint.
  • Protecting the joint: A physical therapist can provide splinting or bracing to promote rest and prevent further injury to the joint during a flare-up.
  • Improving circulation: Gentle movement exercises can help improve blood flow to the affected area, which can aid in healing and pain reduction.

Between gout attacks:

  • Maintaining joint mobility and flexibility: Exercises prescribed by a physical therapist can help prevent stiffness and maintain a good range of motion in the affected joint, reducing the risk of future attacks.
  • Strengthening surrounding muscles: Strengthening the muscles around the affected joint can provide better support and stability, making it less susceptible to damage during activities.
  • Improving balance and coordination: Exercises that improve balance and coordination can help prevent falls, which can trigger gout attacks.
  • Weight management: Physical therapy can include guidance on exercise and nutrition to help maintain a healthy weight, which is a major factor in controlling gout.
  • Education and self-management: Physical therapists can educate you about gout triggers, lifestyle changes that can help prevent attacks, and proper exercise techniques to avoid aggravating your condition.

It’s important to note that physical therapy should be tailored to your individual needs and the severity of your gout. Consult your doctor and a licensed physical therapist to develop a safe and effective program that addresses your specific goals and limitations.
