Tennis Elbow

About Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a common condition that causes pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, near the bony bump. While the name suggests it affects only tennis players, anyone can develop it due to repetitive motions of the wrist and forearm.

Imagine this: you’re gripping your tennis racket, repeatedly striking the ball. The tiny muscles and tendons in your forearm are doing all the work, but over time, they can get overworked and inflamed, leading to that nagging pain around your elbow.

Symptoms

  • Pain on the outside of the elbow, radiating down the forearm
  • Weakness in the grip
  • Difficulty gripping or holding objects
  • Pain when making a fist or extending the wrist
  • Tenderness to the touch on the bony bump on the outside of the elbow

Causes:

  • Repetitive strain on the muscles and tendons of the forearm, often from activities like:
    • Playing tennis or other racquet sports
    • Painting, gardening, or carpentry
    • Typing or using a computer mouse
    • Other activities that involve gripping or twisting the wrist

Diagnosis:

  • Physical examination by a physical therapist
  • X-rays or other imaging tests may be needed in some cases to rule out other conditions

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment:

  • Rest from the activity that caused the pain
  • Ice and pain relievers
  • Physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the muscles and tendons
  • Bracing or splinting to support the elbow

Prevention:

  • Warm up before activities that involve repetitive wrist or forearm movements
  • Use proper technique in sports or activities
  • Take breaks to avoid overuse
  • Strengthen the muscles and tendons of the forearm

Remember, early diagnosis and treatment are key to a speedy recovery from tennis elbow. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms, don’t hesitate to consult your physical therapist.
